Officers will mostly be focusing on drivers who text, but will also be looking for other distractions, like eating and putting on makeup. Texting and driving is punishable with up to a $1000 fine.
Last year, 27 people died on Utah roads due to distracted driving. The Zero Fatalities campaign reports that 1 in 4 accidents are caused by distracted driving. It is estimated that texting and driving is equivalent to a person driving two times over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
