School is back in session full swing statewide now. That means a lot of things to Utah drivers, particularly in the busy cities like Salt Lake City, Provo/Orem, Ogden, St. George, and Logan. Not only should we all have a heightened concern for the youngsters walking to and around the schools, but you can guarantee that police officers will be patroling around school zones watching for speeders and other lawbreakers. It’s good to be aware of the kids, but pay particular attention to crossing guards as well. These friendly, helpful folks have authority to direct traffic, to a certain degree, so be aware of their directions. They don’t just put up their signs to mess with motorists: They’re protecting our children! Far more crossing guards get hurt or even killed by motorists each year than you may realize. They keep our children safe, and we thank them for that service. Let’s give them the same consideration. Don’t learn this lesson the hard way. Slow down when you see the orange vests and flashing yellow lights, or you might be seeing the flashing red and blue lights!
